Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy(PEG)is an endoscopic medicalprocedure in which a tube (PEG tube)is passed into a patient's stomachthrough the abdominal wall,most commonly to provide a means of feeding
when oral intake is not adequate (for example,because of dysphagia or sedation).This provides enteral nutrition despite bypassing the mouth;enteral nutrition isgenerally preferable to parenteral nutrition,The PEG procedure is an alternativeto open surgical gastrostomy insertion,and does not require a general anesthetic;mild sedation is typically used.
Applicable Scenarios:
Swallowing dysfunction (such as stroke, ALS, Parkinson's disease).
Head and neck tumors or esophageal stenosis make it impossible to eat orally.
Severe anorexia nervosa or metabolic diseases require nutritional intervention.
